The study of the interfacial interaction of aluminum-based melts containing zirconium with refractories was carried out
using the lying drop method. It allows determining the resistance of refractories to the action of molten metals and alloys. The experiments were carried out on an automated installation in a vacuum and inert atmosphere in the temperature range from 750 to 1450 °С. The working zone of the furnace was heated at a rate of 100–150 °С/min. Having reached the set temperature, the liquid drop was kept for 10 minutes and images were continuously taken using a digital video camera.
As substrates, the following were used: graphites (fine-grained dense, dense, fine-grained and electrode) and ceramic materials: alundum, aluminum oxide, quartz glass, yttrium oxide. The liquid phase was represented by melts of the following composition: Al69Cu25Zr6, Al69Cu25Zr4Ni2, Al86Ni6La8.
The most resistant material to the Al69Cu25Zr6 melt was fine-grained dense graphite. The melt spreads over its surface only at a temperature of 1200 °С. It was established that the wetting of these refractory materials by the melt does not begin immediately upon reaching the above temperatures, but after a certain period of time. Thus, the liquid alloy spreads over electrode graphite after 4 minutes, fine-grained dense graphite after 6 minutes, pyrographite after 7 minutes, and fine-grained
graphite after 10 minutes. Studies of wetting in the Al69Cu25Zr4Ni2 melt–graphite system led to similar results.
The obtained data on the interfacial interaction of Al69Cu25Zr6 and Al69Cu25Zr4Ni2 melts with refractory materials showed
that graphite and alundum crucibles can be used for their melting (up to a temperature of 1180 °С for the Al86Ni6La8 alloy, for the Al86Ni6Y8 alloy and up to 1180 °С and quartz glass crucibles (up to 1227 °С ). As for the Al86Ni6Y8, Al86Ni6La8 alloys, they can be melted in alundum crucibles (up to 1227 °С).
